The rock world is a big family tree if one decides to look at it a bit more romantically. Usually, musicians don’t have to be related by blood to be considered a family since they have been indirectly mentored by their father and mother figures, and they, in turn, have guided their non-biological children. Yet it is still a different feeling when fans know that this family tree continues to grow biologically as well.
Father-daughter or father-son relationships have always excited listeners, from Paul McCartney and James McCartney to John Bonham and Jason Bonham. Nowadays, Wolfgang Van Halen and Deacon Frey have hit the spotlight with their rock and roll ventures continuing in the field as their iconic fathers’ successors. There seems to be another rising star that hit the music scene at such an early age; Dave Grohl’s daughter Violet, who is only 16 years old.
Violet Grohl’s Musical Ventures
Violet was born in 2006 in Los Angeles to the Grohl family. Her first public musical venture was in 2018 when she sang Adele’s ‘When We Were Young’ at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals benefit concert. For her age, she displayed an amazing performance approved by the crowd. She took the stage with Dave and Nirvana members Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear at The Art of Elysium’s Heaven Gala charity show in 2020.
This year, she moved on to singing on a bigger stage at Lollapalooza with the courtesy of her father during a Foo Fighters set. When the band got a huge emotional hit as they lost their beloved drummer Taylor Hawkins this year, Violet was also there to support her father and his band through these difficult times. The young singer took the stage at Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert and sang Jeff Buckley’s ‘Hallelujah’ and ‘Grace’ and ‘Last Goodbye.’
Dave Grohl’s Thoughts On His Daughter’s Performance
Dave is known to be very fond of his children and family. Creating a lovely family with Jordyn Blum, he could never wait to get back home from tours to see and be with his people. Naturally, he is amazed by and supportive of Violet’s talents. In the tribute concert, he had stated that Violet is “the only person I know who can actually sing a Jeff Buckley song” before welcoming her to the stage.
He not only supports her but also encourages her to continue in his field. To make sure she knows he’s there for her, he gave a role to her in their opening single of the ‘Medicine at Midnight’ album, ‘Making a Fire.’ Violet sings the “Na-Na-Na” in the chorus giving a unique vibe to the song in general. Foo Fighters producer Greg Kurstin also had a finger in the pie and even talked to Grohl about paying her a back-vocalist fee.
Grohl was taken aback at the seriousness of her contribution and told Kurstin, “You can take that money and give it to me, and I’ll put it in an account for Violet that she can open when she’s 18 years old!” Fans would like to think that this is only the beginning for the young singer, and it seems like we will be hearing her name more often.
