Fans love to make theories about various movies; similarly, fans theorized about the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which came true. In the deleted scene from the film, some fans noticed that among all the species Peter Quill’s father, Ego had his relationship with, there was also an alien race whose structure was like that of Mantis’.
However, the director James Gunn stated that “don’t necessarily need to infer anything else,” but now that fan theory has come true. In the newly released television film, Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, it is revealed that Mantis is one of Ego’s children, which means she is Peter’s sister, but she was keeping it a secret.
In the holiday special, we find out that Mantis and Drax are close to each other, as Drax is the only one who knows about her secret. She also came up with the plan to make Peter’s Christmas unforgettable after seeing him sad.
Who was Mantis’ mother?
As mentioned above, Mantis kept the fact from everyone except Drax, and she had a good reason to do so. In the Holiday Special, she explains to Drax when he asks why she does not tell Peter that she is his sister. She says that since Peter was traumatized and hurt after finding out his father, Ego, was the one who killed his mother, and she thinks he will remember that every time he sees her.
So, who is Mantis’ mother? Well, we may have got something regarding this question. Back in 2017, an actress named Jennifer Sharp posted a picture of her on the set of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and wrote in the caption, “It was an honor to work with Kurt Russell even for a short flashback scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 as Mantis’ Mom. (even though the scene was cut). One of the most interesting days on set I’ve ever had. I thought I’d share since the movie is finally out.”
However, the post was later deleted. But surprisingly, the screenshot of the post was uploaded on Reddit. Although the scene was cut, it is confirmed that Mantis and Peter share the same father, making them a brother and sister.
In the last scene of Holiday Special, we see Mantis reveal to Peter that she’s his sister, and Peter reacts opposite to what Mantis had thought. He says that it was the greatest Christmas gift he could ever get.
How this will impact the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
We have always known that Peter always wanted to know and find out about his family, and when he found his father in Vol. 2, it did not end well as he also found out that it was his father who killed his mother. After all the mess, he also lost his love Gamora, and when he was depressed and sad, Mantis’ revelation was more than just a sweet treat for Peter.
And although we still don’t know the plot of the upcoming film, it seems that Peter and Mantis’ relationship will play a massive role in the movie.
Furthermore, even though James Gunn did not reveal this before, he already planned this out, and according to Pom Klementieff, who played Mantis said that she held the secret for over two years. In an interview with TV Line, she said, “I’ve known this little secret for years because I knew about it when I was shooting Guardians of the Galaxy 2. It was supposed to be in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, and James Gunn decided to hold onto it and reveal it later.”
She also added that it will add a special bond between the two characters in their journey in their upcoming film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which will be released on May 5, 2023.
