Ever since the Guardians of the Galaxy first released back in 2014, Groot became one of fans favorite characters. We have seen the Fast and Furious star Vin Diesel’s voiced character, Groot in various forms from full adult Groot to a teenage Groot, baby Groot and now in newly released television film, Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special featured the Swoll Groot, or atleast its what he’s been called by James Gunn.
However, fans might have spotted the difference between the fully grown or adult Groot and Swoll Groot, which is also why they have asked the new Groot is different than the first one. And certainly, the top notch directer Gunn has explained why Swoll Groot’s personality is different.
James Gunn explains why new Groot is different
As mentioned above, fans asked why the new Groot looks different from the OG Groot, Gunn answered on Twitter, “Well, YA Groot, or Swoll Groot, as we call him, is getting bigger, outward as well as upward. As you can see by now he has a different, stockier physiology (and a more outgoing personality) than his father did.” Well, whatever personality and physiology it is, we fans still love Groot.

Furthermore, Gunn also revealed that Swoll Groot was created through CGI and not by using motion capture. Gunn explained, “Swoll Groot is 100% computer generated thanks to the fine folks at Framestore and Wētã Digital.”
New television special showed the even deeper bond between the Guardians and they also introduced few new characters in the film including Cosmo the Spacedog, who has the power of telekinesis.
Will we see Swoll Groot in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as well? Well, that is something we don’t know about however, it is a fact that the Holiday Special sets up the upcoming movie, so that could mean we will get to see Swoll Groot.
Is OG Groot and new Groot different individuals?
Yes, when we saw that OG Groot in the first Guardians film, he sacrificed himself at the end to save his friends however, Rocket Raccoon takes Groot’s small part and plant it. Later, we see that the plant grows into Groot, and while many fans speculated that it was a resurrected form of Groot, but it was not.
I always thought Baby Groot was "of" First Groot, a regeneration of First Groot, sort of like a phoenix rising from the ashes or whatever. that Baby Groot was basically born when his dad died is so much fucking sadder

This is what happened, when Groot sacrificed himself, he died there and the new Groot we see is the OG Groot’s son which is why James Gunn mentioned Swoll Groot is different in physiology and personality than his “father did.”
A while ago, Gunn posted a story on his Instagram where some asked if we willl see the OG or adult Groot again and he answered, “Sadly that original Groot is no longer with us, so unless there is a prequel of some type, we won’t see him again.”
However, we know that there is no plan for the film’s prequel right now, but maybe after the third part of film, Marvel may consider making a film about Rocket Racoon and the OG Groot, especially because there are rumors that the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be concluding Rocket’s character. Moreover, it is also said that this film will be Incredibly emotional.
Even Gunn explained that he had to finish Rocket’s character arc, he said in an interview, “The reason why I needed to finish this is because I love the character of Rocket more than any character I’ve ever dealt with before, and I needed to finish his story and that is what Volume 3 is about. I absolutely needed to do it, and I think we’ve done it in a spectacular way that I can’t wait for people to see.”
