Netflix’s newest show Devil in Ohio is the definition of the new suspense thriller in the world of horror. This unsettling series is all about cults and Satan which will make you sweat out.
Based on the book of the same name written by Daria Polatin, the series kicks off with a runaway teenager Mae, who shows up in an Ohio hospital. There the hospital psychiatrist, Dr. Suzzanne Mathis’ interest is intrigued, and offers to look after her until she finds a good foster home.
Only to experience supernatural events, leaving the Mathis family in shambles. Mae’s totally strange behavior towards the doctor’s daughter, the pentagram carved into Mae’s back, and lots of other trials and tribulations, to come in the series later on.

The plot starts with Mae, a runaway teenager who ends up in an Ohio hospital. There, she meets the psychiatrist of the hospital, Dr. Suzzanne Mathis who gets interested in her story and offers her a temporary home until she manages to get a good foster family.
After her appearance, the Mathis family starts experiencing supernatural things in their previously very normal home. Later on, astonishingly Dr. Suzzanne finds out that Mae escaped from a devil-worshiping cult.

Well, the answer is quite contradictory to be honest. The Devil in Ohio is based on the book of the same name by author Daria Polatin. And to answer the question, yes The Devil in Ohio is based on a true story.
While the book and the series is based on true events, not all the materials in the series are true events. Even the cult which was portrayed in the series and the book was a great work of art.
Daria has confirmed that her work is based on a true event but hasn’t revealed other notable details. Daria commented, “I will never reveal details about my source, but suffice it to say, it was quite horrifying to hear the details of how a young woman escaped from the satanic cult she’d grown up in.”
She confirmed the best thing to do and to take a newer approach in the field of cinemas is to creatively fictionalize the details and let it take a life of its own.

Daria Polatin, the author of the book hasn’t confirmed the reference she had taken for her book but we can surely have assumptions based on what cases could be behind the series for sure.
The Kirtland Cult Killing is a cult killing case that happened all the way back in 1989. This grueling and cold case led to the killing of a family of five. Lundgren, a self-proclaimed prophet, and other members of the cult murdered a family of five in Ohio.
The Xenos Christain Fellowship is another religious cult based in Columbus, Ohio. It is said that the cult recruited young members and made them perform in shame, and even blackmail to show their devotion. Seems like the cult has changed its name to Dwell Community Church recently.
