Just a few months earlier, Ryan Reynolds along with Hugh Jackman announced that Hugh will reprise his Wolverine role in Deadpool 3 which shook the internet. There is no doubt that Hugh is and will be the best live-action Wolverine, and certainly, fans are not ready to let Hugh go.
However, he recently stated that he really did intend to retire from his iconic role before he signed on to reprise it one more time.
Hugh Jackman says he was done with playing Wolverine
Appearing on Deadline Hugh told, “I’m a terrible poker player. All this time I was saying I was done, I really meant it. But anyway, somewhere deep down, this idea was obviously lurking and brewing.”
Hugh first appeared on screen as Wolverine in the 2000 film X-Men, after that, he kept popping up playing the iconic character in follow-up X-Men films. He last appeared as Wolverine in the 2017 movie Logan, and he later announced that he was done with the character.
That was until he watched Deadpool. In the same interview with Deadline, he said, “Well, I was 20 minutes into watching Deadpool and I had just announced, literally, a few weeks before that Logan was going to be my last, which I fully intended. And then I was like, ‘Uh-oh’. He later continued, “it came to me like, ‘I really want to do that.’ And that was it.”
What can we expect from the character in Deadpool 3?
Although Deadpool 3 is going to take place in MCU, it still will be R rated film, becoming the first R-rated film in the MCU. Being an R-rated and one of the most anticipated films, hopes are really high for this film and Wolverine’s character.
There is still no information on how they will bring Wolverine back but Hugh has stated that Wolverine will be “angrier.” He said, “There’s no choice. He’s definitely the angrier, acerbic, grumpy. And he’s going to take a lot of free shots at Ryan Reynolds — physically, that is.”
Since there is no update on the film’s plot we don’t really know what to expect from the movie but Wolverine’s character will play a vital role in the film, with a lot of aggression. It will be interesting to see Deadpool and Wolverine’s chemistry.
Ryan Reynolds did not think Hugh would agree to play the character
While fans were left surprised after Hugh’s announcement to return as Wolverine, it turns out we are not the only one who was surprised but so was Hugh’s pal Ryan Reynolds because he thought that Hugh would not agree to come onboard to reprise Wolverine’s role.
After Disney bought Fox Studious, Reynolds stated that he needed something big to return as Deadpool but he never thought that Hugh would agree to play Wolverine again so when he agreed to play, Reynolds was surprised. Hugh said, “I think, actually, he’d given up, I think it was a big shock to him. There was a massive pause, and then he said, ‘I can’t believe the timing of this’.”
Reynolds also said that it was beyond their wildest dreams, and it certainly was because we did not have any hope that Hugh would return to play his iconic role again.
