You often might have noticed the bitter relationship between the characters has turned into a romantic one. Well, we just assumed same for the these two foes, Hermione and Draco. It was not hard for us to suppose that Draco always liked Hermione if not would eventually fall for her, despite him being cold to the muggle blood.
Are we on the right path in our imaginations or we are just assuming the scenario? Don’t worry! Here we are with the answer in this article, comparing and analyzing their relationship from the whole plot of Harry Potter books as well as movies.
Draco’s hatred for the Mudbloods
Draco belonged to a rich family with a pure bloodline who believed in the purity of wizarding blood. Being the Death eaters and hardcore supporters of Slytherins, they have hard feelings against the muggles possessing magical abilities.
Draco’s family, especially his father keeps on talking shit about the muggles and regards their children as the filth of mudbloods. As there is a saying “the apple never moves far from its tree”, which implies perfectly on Draco. He ridicules the one who doesn’t meet his standards.
Many times Draco has boasted about his standards. He has constantly mocked the Weasely family for being poor. Even he has spoken crap about Hermione and her upbringing to her face and made her cry. How can we forget the time when he insulted calling her the derogatory epithet “mudblood”? She was deeply hurt by his word.
Draco didn’t stop till here, we have seen him ridiculing Harry for his upbringing too. He was just the one who forwarded his hand for friendship with Harry after boasting about his high standards. After the denial of his friendship with Harry, he has not left any stone unturned to humiliate Harry, Hermione, and Ron.
Did Draco have a crush on Hermione at any point in time?
We can’t deny the fact that Draco actually hates Hermione and there is no evidence at any point that would show Draco’s affection for Hermione. Draco just kept sticking to his family belief aligned to the blood status of wizards and witches and for him, Hermione was the one with filthy blood.
How can we forget the time when Basilisk was attacking the Muggle-born students? It was when Harry and Ron went to the Slytherin’s common room disguised as Crabbe and Goyle using Polyjuice Potion. Draco told them that he hoped Basilisk to kill Hermione.
“But I know one thing – last time the Chamber of Secrets was opened, a Mudblood died. So I bet it’s a matter of time before one of them’s killed this time …. I hope it’s Granger,” he said with relish.
Another instance can be taken from the Harry Potter and Goblet of Fire when Draco’s dad and his fellow Death Eaters were sexually harassing muggle women during the Quidditch World Cup. Even this time Draco humiliated Hermione and mocked that Death Eaters would assault her as well.
“Granger, they’re after Muggles,” said Malfoy. “D’you want to be showing off your knickers in midair? Because if you do, hang around . . . they’re moving this way, and it would give us all a laugh.”
Well, nobody would want their crush to be dead or assaulted, it is the worst that one can wish even for their enemy. However, we can consider the change in Draco’s behavior as the story of the Harry Potter franchise progresses. We could see his hatred becoming less with the course of time. He seems to develop respect for her as she was top in her class, the one which he always wanted to be.
The time we saw Draco caring for Hermione during the same Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, during the after-party of the Quidditch World Cup. He warned Harry and Ron to take Hermione away as she was vulnerable to being attacked by the Death Eaters. However, this time too, he didn’t step aside to humiliate the poor muggle blood.
Did Hermione too hate Draco?
There is no exact reason for Hermione to hate Draco like he had to hate her, which was of course his pureblood family belief but how can a person resist the one who constantly humiliates the one?
The same goes for Hermione, she has not got any grudges for Draco, only the thing that constantly bothers her is his hate for her and the muggles. Draco keeps on repeatedly insulting her and her friend that the brightest witch of her age could not keep calm.
Well, Granger is sometimes bothered by the cruel nature of Draco too. Not to forget the time when Draco was the reason Buckbeak was sentenced to death. The golden trio was able to save the magical creature but Hermione could not pacify her anger. She was about to cast magic on him but was stopped by Ron. Well, she did not punish him by magic but she did punch Draco in his nose.
Hermione had nothing to do with Draco and the way he is, it was his evil actions toward her and her friends that triggered her hatred toward him. She personally has never intended bad for him and it doesn’t seem that she wanted any kind of enmity with him.
Who did Draco Malfoy end up marrying?
Draco may have changed his view regarding the purity of blood, although he married the one with the pure blood and she was Astoria Greengrass. Draco was two years ahead of her and she was a sister of his fellow Slytherins, Daphne Greengrass.
His parents, Lucius and Narcissa were not in the favor of Draco marrying Astoria as they had high hopes for a girl whose family featured on the ‘Sacred Twenty-Eight’. Draco still took a stand for his decision of marrying her despite their disapproval. Thus at some point between 2000 to 2005, both of them got married.
Well, Lucius and Narcissa had a high expectation that their successor would believe in the superiority of pure blood but Astoria refused to raise their grandson Scorpius to believe Muggles were less than purebloods. Thus the family gathering of the Malfoy family is often fraught with tension.
Who did Hermione marry?
Hermione also married a boy with pure blood. No no! it is not Draco Malfoy. (He is not only the one with pure blood). It is instead her childhood friend, Ron Weasely.
You may have seen even Ron mocking Hermione several times, but it is not the same as Draco mocking her. Ron genuinely regards her as a friend and his mocking is not as provoking as that of Draco. Later in the plot, Ron is further seen as very protective of Hermione.
Well, Hemione always lacked the wizard family who could guide her and love her as well. With the supportive and caring family of Ron who did not have any problem with the muggle-born family, Hermione’s marriage life came to a happier turn. Although later the couple was however shown to visit the marriage counselor, still they make better pairs than Draco and Hermione.
What could have happened if Draco and Hermione had gotten together?
Well, we know the ending of the Harry Potter series. Hermione actually ended up with her friend, Ron, and Draco, and Hermione getting together is total imaginary stuff. Still in our imaginations what could have brought them together? Will it be Hermione being pure blood, being sorted in Slytherins, and both Draco and her being best friends? In that case, Draco could be muggle blood too and both could be friends sharing a common bond.
However, if the duo had actually come together, there would have been some of the possibilities in the Harry Potter series that would have been totally different from the plot line.
We have seen Hermione as an Integral part of the golden trio (Harry, Hermione, and Ron). We have also witnessed the hate of Draco for Harry and Ron. So this brings a big question to the friendship among the golden trio with Hermione being together with Draco. Well not being part of the golden trio is not only the case, she might hate these two guys as well in the influence of Draco. Wouldn’t that be very tragic?
So, let us not see things from only the dark perspective only, let us also turn our imagination to a positive point of view now. What if Hermione turned Draco into a better person? In that case, Draco would have good feelings towards the muggle-born and would not e that angry guy who only boasts about his pure and rich bloodline. Also, he could be a good friend of Harry and Ron as well. This could have been quite amazing.
Tom Felton, Emma Watson’s crush!
Draco and Hermione were not seen sharing even a cordial relationship onscreen. It would not be wrong to say that he was her biggest foe but if we have to say behind the camera, things are different. Hermione had a crush on Draco. What??
Oh yeah! Emma Watson, the actress who played Hermione had a crush on Tom Felton, onscreen Draco during the first two films, Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets.
In an interview with Seventeen Waston admitted, “For the first two movies, I had a huge crush on Tom Felton. He was my first crush,” and she added further “He totally knows. We talked about it — we still laugh about it. We are really good friends now, and that’s cool.”
To confirm this fact, we’ve got another piece of evidence, from the Jonathan show in 2009 where Emma said “Between the ages of 10 and 12 I had a really terrible crush on Tom Felton”.
Further when Jonathon Ross added “because you know why girls like bad guys” she continued “We love a bad guy, he was a few years older and he had a skateboard — he used to do trick on it, and he used to like he was so cool, oh…”
