James Gunn, who directed one of Marvel Studios’ best movie series, Guardians of the Galaxy, was announced as the new creative head of the DC studios about a month earlier. Many Marvel fans were concerned that Gunn would not return for more MCU projects after the announcement; however, he later tweeted that he is not leaving Marvel. Furthermore, he also stated that he loves both Marvel and DC. Hopefully, this could mean that Guardians of the Galaxy might not be Gunn’s last Marvel project.
Recently, Gunn’s directed television film Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special teased that DC’s most popular hero Batman exists in the MCU. Furthermore, Marvel’s 2021 film Eternal indicated the existence of Superman as a fictional figure in the MCU.
Thor star Chris Hemsworth recently revealed that he wants a Marvel DC crossover, and he also mentioned in an interview that he wants to fight DC’s hero Aquaman, portrayed by Jason Momoa. And since Gunn is now the head of DC along with Peter Safran, fans are eager to know if the Marvel DC crossover is possible.
Thor vs Aquaman
Both Thor and Aquaman are beloved superhero characters from the two separate superhero universes and while Hemsworth announced that he will be taking a break from acting, he also stated a few days earlier in an interview with Geek House Show that a matchup between Thor and Aquaman could be fun.
He said, “It would be cool. Who would be a fun matchup? Thor and Aquaman, that could be fun – you know Jason is a good friend of mine.” Furthermore, he also seems to like a matchup between the most powerful and unstoppable force in the DC universe, Black Adam with the God of thunder.
Not only Hemsworth but also Aquaman star Jason Momoa, believe that the two most popular superhero universes should eventually crossover. He told GamesRadar, “Across the street, we have the pantheon of superheroes and supervillains of Marvel. To me, they can not only exist, but they should, in my mind, cross paths one day.”
Is it possible for a Marvel and DC crossover?
While the crossover between Marvel and DC has already happened several times in the comics, like Superman picking up Mjölnir and Hawkeye joining forces with the Justice League, fans are yet to see the biggest crossover in cinema’s history. But how likely will the two universes cross paths?
Certainly, it is not possible anytime soon but that does not mean the crossover is impossible, instead, there is a big possibility of Marvel and DC crossing paths, why? Well, cause back in 2021, director James Gunn appeared on Jake’s Takes to discuss his DC film Suicide Squad, where he also shared his desire to make a Groot and Harley Quinn crossover film.
Furthermore, he stated that he discussed the idea with the head of both companies, Keven Feige and Toby Emmerich [now resigned]. He explained, “I would really be happy to do a Harley Quinn and Groot movie that would be exciting for me and Not only have I thought about that, but I’ve actually talked about that to the heads of both Marvel and DC, You know, everybody’s open to everything, but whether anything would ever happen, who knows?”
As mentioned, since Gunn is now the creative head of the DC studios this could also mean that he will somehow manage to bring two universes together. Moreover, as mentioned above, Gunn’s directed television film Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special hinted that Batman exists in the MCU, and maybe, just maybe, it was done by Gunn as an indication that fans could see the biggest crossover in cinema history in the near future.
