We first saw Red Skull in Captain America: The First Avengers, and after that, we saw him in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. And after Endgame, when The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was announced, there were rumors that Ross Marquand would return as Red Skull in the series, but the words turned out to be fake.
However, now that the new Captain America film and its title have been announced, the rumor of the Red Skull returning is circulating again. Captain America: New World Order is all set to be released in 2024, and it is based on the Marvel Comics story of the same title, which features Red Skull.
Does that mean we are finally getting Red Skull back in action? It is yet to be confirmed. However, it is likely to happen. Furthermore, Ross Marquand stated that he is interested in returning as Red Skull.
Is Red Skull returning in the upcoming Captain America movie?
Titled from the fundamental conspiracy theory, New World Order is a criminal group led by Red Skull. However, the movie’s plot and the story could be different from the comics because the film’s antagonist is confirmed to be The Leader (Samuel Sterns), but still, it is a pretty logical and good idea to show Red Skull’s return.
And as mentioned above, Ross Marquand talked about his possible return of Red Skull in an interview and said he is interested in playing the character again. He said, “I can neither confirm nor deny that, but I would jump at the chance. I’m a comic book guy.”
He did not reveal if he would be in Anthony Mackie’s Captain American, but he is interested in playing the character again. And whether or not we see him in the new Captain America film, we firmly believe we will get to see him in the Avengers: Secret Wars.
How Avengers: Endgame made Red Skull’s return possible
Before we discuss how Avengers: Endgame made Red Skull’s return possible, let’s go back and briefly talk about how he ended up in Vormir. In his battle with Chris Evans’ Captain America, he holds the Tesseract with his bare hand. However, the stone didn’t consider him worthy, so he was banished to Vormir and became the keeper of the soul stone.
After that, we directly saw Red Skull in Avengers: Infinity War, where he guided Thanos to the Soul Stone. Thanos then obtained the stone by sacrificing Gamora, freeing Red Skull from his stone-keeper role. We also saw the same thing happening in the Avengers: Endgame in a different timeline where Natasha Romanova (Black Widow) sacrifices herself. Now that he is free, we might see him in future MCU projects, more powerful than ever because it seems that his direct contact with Tesseract awakened supernatural abilities.
Red Skull will return in future projects of the MCU. However, even if Captain America: New World Order is a perfect movie to show Red Skull’s return after Endgame, as mentioned above, even the actor who played Red Skull seems unsure if he will be in Anthony Mackie’s Captain America or not.
Red Skull is one badass Marvel villain, some even state that he’s Marvel’s diabolical character. We still have not seen his full potential in the MCU. In the comics, he has done many criminal things including turning Steve Rogers into a Hydra mole. So, hopefully, the filmmakers will consider featuring Red Skull in the upcoming movies Captain America: New World Order and Avengers: Secret Wars.
